Are you motivated enough?

If you are a single guy or girl then you really should have no problem working from home. Your only concern here is your personal motivation. If you are motivated enough then you'll probably spend too much time on the computer.

It's far better to work for three quality hours straight producing that valuable content than it is to sit all day doing different things and reading the news websites and stuff.

This comes back to focus.

Your main threat to your success is going to be the obvious distractions that you will get from working from home like watching TV, going shopping, popping here or there when you should be typing furiously on that keyboard. That's something that only you can overcome.

The second disadvantage is that, depending on your social life, you really have no one to talk to and it can get pretty lonely working on your own for months on end.

If you are already do a substantial amount of commuting then the isolation can be more than made up for by the knowledge that you are not sitting in traffic jams all day and passing your life away.

Fantastic for single mums!

If you are a single mum then you obviously need to fit your money making efforts in and around your kids. The Internet is a fantastic place to make money for single mums or even work from home mums. The key is to plan your work time so that you can put in those three or four quality hours without being distracted by the kids. This probably means working in the evenings.

For a work at home Dad or Mum however the situation is not so easy.

Don't get distracted - remove those excuses

From experience I know that working from home is fraught with difficulty and it's not easy to get the right balance of work/play time. Distractions can be numerous especially in the first three or four months for several reasons:

A: You have no discernible income and so you are probably living off your savings whilst you make this work. To a wife/husband this can be a big conflict of interest. They see you working all day/night and giving nothing back to the family in return. They start to impinge on your work time. Can you "just pop" to get the kids from school. "Just nip" to the shop.

"Why don't you make dinner tonight?" They ask as their frustration with your obsession grows.

B: Kids are a nightmare in the school holidays. Everything is fine and dandy during term time but come those holidays it can turn ugly. Make sure you have an office you can retreat to with a lock on it!

Make sure you have enough cash to start with

Remember, if you are just starting at this then you are not going to see an income cheque for around three or four months. It will probably take you that to get to $100 which is the first payout threshold for google adsense. Most affiliate sites have a 30 day delay on payments for fraud prevention so work on four to five months before you start seeing any revenue.

If you don't have the comfort of a separate room to use as your office then renting one is a good decision. If you can afford it, it makes sense to do this from the very outset and will stop many of these distractions from happening.

Try phoning a few of the computer companies that are local and see if they have a free desk if you are on a really tight budget. Alternatively if you have a local business development centre then they often have small startup offices at very sensible rates.

Get the work from home balance right

Working from home sounds great - and it can be. But you need to get the balance of work/home life right to avoid conflict. Don't immerse yourself so thoroughly in your work that you fail to notice your family. They were the reason you decided to make more money right?

If you can afford it get an office. It will separate your work life from family life and give you a place to focus your efforts. Keep to an eight hour day or less and make those hours really count.

Getting up in your jim jams and starting work sounds really great - but are you really going to continue doing this for another two or three years?
