Shopify To Support Apple Pay Online Payments
Last Updated
June 16, 2016

The rise of the powerhouse eCommerce website builder continues unabated as it announces plans to be amongst the first early adopters of Apple Pay. By September shoppers using a Shopify eCommerce store will be able to make their purchases using just a mobile phone and fingerprint identification.

The payment gateways supported are Stripe, Braintree (PayPal), Firstdata, Authorize.net and Cybersource as well as the inherent Shopify payments system. There will be no extra cost for using the Apple Pay system. See my Shopify Review for more details.

What is Apple Pay?

Apple Pay is already accepted in over 250,000 stores in the UK and it is used as a payment system used instead of using a contactless card. It is available to users of Natwest, Royal Bank Of Scotland, Nationwide, Santander, Ulster Bank, MBNA and American Express account holders.

How Does It Work?

Apple Pay uses a near field communication (NFC) chip similar to the one in a contactless card which is embedded in the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch to pay for goods using a contactless card reader. It works by using it's Touch ID sensor to take a fingerprint authorisation when Apple Pay senses a compatible card reader. When the payment is accepted the phone will beep and vibrate to let you know that the transaction has completed.

Older phones like the iPhone 5 don't contain the NFC chip and are therefore not able to take advantage of Apple Pay.

For users of mobile phones who like to do their shopping online Apple Pay being accepted is good news because trying to type in name and address details using a tiny keyboard is one of the big drawbacks of mobile online shopping. It will also lead to a reduced number of abandoned carts for merchants who should welcome the news and embrace the technology.

Is it Secure?

For the user Apple Pay is a more secure way of using contactless payments. Your credit card numbers are not stored on the device you are using for the payment. When you add a credit card a unique Device Account Number is generated and encrypted. This number is then stored on the mobile device.

If the phone is lost or stolen then the user can suspend Apple Pay until the phone is recovered or the phone gets wiped using “wipe my phone”. Another advantage of this system is that the user won't need to cancel credit or debit cards if they do mislay their phone.

For the merchant it means the chances of fraud payments are decreased and it is a step in the right direction for eCommerce merchants.

How Do I Enable it?

Simple – go to your payment settings in Shopify and click “Activate” under the Apple Pay section.
