Wow! It's October already.

For affiliates that means the start of the silly season and the Christmas rush. If you've got established sites and you don't make money over the christmas period then something is wrong with your shopping sites.

I don't have any shopping type sites in my portfolio and so I was thinking of building something but it's too late for this christmas, should have started that about three months ago.

Niche markets are easy to find:

I got dragged into a shopping trip last night and in Tesco they have a really big display of Halloween outfits and gimmicks. In Matalan too there is a big area given over to Halloween, it seems these days that every "special" occasion is given the full marketing treatment in order to milk the public for as much as they possibly can.

You could build a good affiliate portfolio around these special occasions. Christmas, Easter, Mothers day, Fathers day, birthdays etc. it would also be a good way for an affiliate to work because you could plan your work around the next upcoming promotion - let's say it's new years day, get it all ready and set up and then whilst that promotion is working for you, you switch to the next, say Easter or whatever is coming up next.

These types of sites are fantastic pay per click opportunities. If you do the planning and the research way ahead then you steal a big march over all of those affiliates that are scrambling around trying to make up the time and hashing it up.

Birthdays are a fantastic affiliate opportunity. If you can capture the email address you have a lifetime customer. If you can get their age even better. Actually If you can get their age and address then you have a goldmine of opportunity here. They grow from bouncy castles to teen parties, 18th birthday, engagement, marriage, 40th birthday. The possibilities are endless. Set up a good mailing campaign and you can keep the offers going for years.

So what should we be doing now?

Christmas has passed us by, for this year at least. But in the new year everybodys' thought's turn to...

Weight loss.

Dieting.

Living more healthily.

Giving up vices.

You've got three months to build the site and have it ready for the new year 2010.

Market saturated?

You'll always have competition. The trick is to find a small niche in your market that you can dominate by building three or four sites over a two year period or so.

By analysing your genre you can break down the target market into recognisable chunks.You choose one of these small chunks as your market to focus on and then gradually you will learn through trial and error what works and what doesn't work. It's a process of refinement. But if you don't start doing something nothing will ever happen.

Tomorrow I'll start looking at building our new health site and we'll start the preparations to get it ready for January 1st.
