Wix Website Builder Review
Wix.com is a cloud-based online website builder that lets you create beautiful, professional and functional websites without needing to know a line of code.
The companies growth has been remarkable. From its small beginnings in 2006 Wix passed 1 million users in 2009 and in 2014 passed 50 million users. That is phenomenal growth by anyone's standards, and with new technology, in the pipeline, there is no reason to suspect that growth is going to stall anytime soon.
I put Wix Website Builder through its paces to see exactly what it can create and how good it is.
Why Is Wix.com So Popular?
Anyone that has used Wordpress or Joomla knows how difficult it is to produce something that not only looks good – but looks different from everyone else.
Templates for Wordpress are freely available but it always seems like the best ones are used over and over again and trying to make your site stand out from the crowd design wise can be difficult.
To compound, the difficulty Wordpress was intended as a blogging tool and nothing more. It is a quick way for users to express their thoughts without having to go through a mountain of code or steep learning code to do it.
It is severely limited as a medium to express yourself creatively through design, and that is why the Wix website building tool has become so popular. The ability to be able to incorporate graphics and create pleasing designs is where Wix excels and why users love it so much.
The whole Wix platform is built on a drag and drop interface, so you don't need to know any code at all, and you can make relatively complex designs – background videos and different background sections are just the tips of the iceberg of what you can create with Wix.
Wix doesn't provide 24/7 customer support, but that isn't a deal breaker. There is so much help and support available on the site that you'll rarely need to contact them.
The Wix support page is a stunning collection of every support question that has been asked over the years. Combine that with a Forum where you can ask your questions, and you have one of the best support channels in the business.
The large Wix community is a testament to the companies investment in developing new and easier ways of doing things. Back that up with customer stories, showcase and an extensive social media presence and it's no wonder this company is so successful.
Themes And Templates
If you want to make something that looks fantastic, then Wix doesn't disappoint. There are over 500 templates here in easy to find categories, and you could easily spend a couple of hours browsing through them to find some inspiration.
Templating and design are where Wix excels; you can look at the template on a PC and then there is a “quick view” to see what it is going to look like on a mobile device. Everything is very easy to use, and simplicity is at the heart of everything Wix.com stands for. If you can't find something that you'd like to use as a basis for your next project I'd be very surprised. There are hundreds of examples of HTML5 websites created, and nearly all of them look fabulous.
I'm seriously impressed by the designs on show here. In addition to the design aspect because everything is done via “drag and drop” you can put together a new website in a day or so and be up and running with the basics very quickly. For people that run events or need to build a website where time is of the essence then Wix would be an excellent choice.
Apps And Tools
Another Wix high point. The App “after-market” is a huge community of developers that are building functionality into the product and making it stronger and more well rounded.
Over 250 Apps are available in the store which allows you to add custom features to your website. Need a live-chat function? Want to send out a newsletter every week? Showcase testimonials?
In Wordpress, you have loads of plug-ins available, but they are nowhere near as easy to plug-in and use as this, and very often you get conflicts with other plugins (Apps) that don't play nicely together. Wix solves all of this with its one click install technology.
One of the things that struck me as I did my research for this review was that at £9.97 per month for the unlimited package Wix is superb value for money. That's one of the biggest reasons behind their success.
You get unlimited bandwidth and 10GB of storage which should be more than enough for any website that isn't going to go viral from day one. One of the hidden charges in standard low-cost hosting is that once you start exceeding bandwidth limits, you have to move up to the next level but that doesn't apply with Wix
You'll also get a free domain name for a year which is a great bonus.
Wix isn't designed as an eCommerce store builder. It is an accomplished website builder that enables you to put together a fantastic looking website without having to learn any code or break the bank to pay someone to do it for you.
However via the App store, it does have eCommerce functionality, and so you can use it to sell products. It doesn't have the advanced features that get with Shopify or Bigcommerce, but if ease of use is your primary concern, then Wix may fit the bill. (Don't you love puns!).
Essentially your choice boils down to whether you are happy to accept PayPal payments as your primary method of receiving funds. If you are, then you are ready to go. If not then Wix isn't for you.
I'm sure with the pace of development though you'll be able to do that in future.
At the end of the day, it is all about focus. Wix majors on being able to build a great website with the minimum of tech skills and their drag and drop interface is the market leader and for everyone else to catch up with.
E-commerce is a secondary consideration, and if you are not building the next Amazon and happy to take payments via PayPal, then this could be for you. Don't expect advanced eCommerce features though because this product has not been developed with those in mind.
Wix is an accomplished website builder with hundreds of thousands of satisfied customers, and if you want a beautiful looking site without having to do any coding, then this is for you.
Come to think of it, why bother to learn to code at all when Wix can do it all for you without having to open the bonnet?
