How To Start A Successful Blog

Building a successful blog takes a ton of hard work. It's not a case of posting up a few articles and hoping for the best.

Firstly you'll need a regular publishing schedule and to dedicate time to producing your blog posts. The most important thing to know about blogging is that it takes a lot of time to create something worthwhile reading, both in the execution of your blogging strategy and building up a body of work that is a valuable resource for your readers. A lot of people give up because they don't see immediate results.

You won't, but don't let that put you off. Blogging is the most cost efficient route to market in the long term. Short term you'll need to use other promotion strategies like PPC to make sales and keep a roof over your head, but over the long run, blogging will pay for itself many times over.

When the traffic starts flowing from your blog posts you'll be thankful you started making this strategy work for you.

20 years ago I picked up a copy of the Sunday Times and out fell the glossy magazine the newspaper uses as a vehicle to sell expensive advertising space. Along with all the other clutter that used to go straight in the bin. There should be a tax levied on distributing material that goes straight to recycling. Buried amongst the celebrity interviews and foodie pages was a restaurant turned TV critic reviewing the week's Television. AA Gill was as heartless as a ravenous grizzly bear whether tearing apart badly done TV drama or savaging undercooked restaurant...

Great copywriting that rivets your audience to their seats and guarantees their full attention for the duration of your piece is a finely balanced high wire act. Too many clever words bewilder the audience while keeping it too simple runs the risk of falling into the net where all the other dunce blogging failures have landed. The middle road is filled with acts that walked the tightrope but never quite captivated or engaged their audience. They just went through the motions in the expectancy that it was “enough”.

Today I'm going to explain why blogging should be your automatic choice of marketing channel and how you use it to gain valuable search engine traffic. We live in a Google world. The search engine behemoth determines what the best search results are. There are alternatives for search but who uses them? More to the point if they were a better tool for finding the information you need, then they would be Google. Employing the brightest mathematical minds on the planet, building an algorithm that filters out the weak from the strong, the...

"It's an Acer 286 with 1MB RAM and a 20MB hard drive." In 1988 I started my new job as a sales manager for a computer company in Thirsk, North Yorkshire. In this year the Hubble telescope was launched, and the film "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" was released and was the most technically advanced live-action/animation hybrid in days before computer animation became widely used in filmmaking. The space shuttle program resumed a little over two years after the Challenger space shuttle disintegrated soon after launch and Rick Astley was never...

Blogging for your eCommerce website startup is going to be tough if you don't have a plan. A blank screen and an empty mind are not going to produce that next stellar blog post! Before you start writing you need a list of ideas and some rough notes sketched out the night before so that when you sit down to write, you already have a subject prepared. One of the tricks of the trade I've learned for blogging is to write the headline and a few notes the night before so that your subconscious mind gets...
What Sting Can Teach You About Blogging

Whenever I’m struggling for writing inspiration, I’m reminded of Sting’s autobiography. In it, he describes the torturous route from living and sleeping rough in his transit van through to meeting his future band mates and their subsequent rise to fame. Throughout the journey, you are always reminded that inspiration can strike at any time and the most important tools in a songwriter’s armoury are the humble pen and paper to jot down the eureka moment when it occurs.

There is a fantastic scene in the series one finale of “Mad Men” where the Kodak guys turn up for a presentation by Don to show them how they can market their “wheel”. It’s certainly the finest 3 minutes of television in the first series, and if you haven’t seen “Mad Men” yet and have more than a passing interest in marketing or advertising, then you have a whole box set of treats awaiting you. The “wheel” was a new product that Kodak invented to display photos quickly and easily using 35mm slides...
