UK Mobile Credit Card Readers

Taking credit card payments on the move is getting easier by the day. If you are a UK small business then my guide to taking mobile credit card payments will help you understand which solution will be the best for you.

Using these mobile credit card reader solutions there is no requirement for a dedicated merchant account or any monthly fees. You simply pay per transaction as you go.

This does mean that the overall transaction rate you pay is slightly higher than if you had a dedicated PDQ machine rental contract, but the benefit is that there is no long-term contract and no monthly fees.

The four solutions I list here are the most popular on the market and have the best rates and support. Choosing between them is an easy decision because although they are all slightly different they are all low-cost solutions.

See the full mobile credit card reader comparison table here.

Square Mobile Credit Card Payments

The Square brand has quickly grown from a single mobile card reader and now has many features for a small business to take advantage of including a unique POS (point of sale) system, Square for restaurants and Square eCommerce.

Square has an unrivalled feature set, easy to understand pricing (transaction fees are 1.75%) and quick setup which outmanoeuvres some of the more established companies in this marketplace. Established in 2009 by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, Square.com (formerly Squareup) is easily the most advanced mobile credit card processing system on the market.

The low transaction fee cost (1.75%) is the biggest reason to choose Square as well as no monthly contract and no monthly fee. In addition to the low fees, there are plenty of add-ons to add even more value to the overall package - Virtual Terminal (allowing you to process party not present transactions for mail order) invoicing and recurring billing are all features that most other operators charge for. You'll also get advanced analytics and an API for integration with EKMShopify or BigCommerce

The only upfront cost you'll have to pay is for the card reader hardware which at the moment is on special offer for £19 (Normally £39) until 30th November 2018.

Sumup Mobile Credit Card Payments

SumUp is the leading Mobile Point Of Sale (mPOS) company in Europe. Which may be surprising for UK users as they are largely unheard of in the UK but with the mPOS market growing rapidly we are going to be hearing a lot more from them. In fact in this update SumUp is now the leading mobile point of sale company in Europe.

They currently have a staff of just over 200 people working in more than 31 countries who provide their services to merchants, and they are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. SumUp continues to grow and is backed by American Express, BBVA, Groupon, Holtzbrinck Ventures and other renowned venture capital investors.

On the face of it Sumup offers the same product and service as iZettle or Square and at a cheaper rate too but what caught my eye as I browsed their website for this review was their use of technology as a customer facing tool which always bodes well for customer service.

PayPal Mobile Credit Card Payments

I've used PayPal as a customer for 16 years and never had a problem. However, the terrible stories of accounts being frozen and funds seized lead me to be wary about recommending PayPal as your payment gateway provider.

The fact is that PayPal is a monster company. It is huge. And with big business come lots of complaints. It's inevitable.

However for getting payments processed and quickly without any red tape or forms to fill PayPal is seriously good at what it does and since being spun off from its parent company eBay in 2015, it has begun to address some of the problems that were holding it back.

Namely the slow approach to rapidly changing technology and its lack of customer service.

The PayPal mobile credit card reader has no monthly fees or contracts.

iZettle Mobile Credit Card Payments

Based in Stockholm, Sweden and with offices in London, Berlin, Madrid and Mexico, iZettle provides the technology you need to accept card payments on the go.

A smartphone App is connected to a credit card reader via the audio jack or Bluetooth, and the App works like a cash register. The application and card reader meet international security requirements and are EMV approved, (Europay, Mastercard, Visa) which is a standard for card payments.

The new iZettle card reader connects via cable to the audio socket of a smartphone, and it fits in your pocket, so it is easy to carry around with you. This is a useful tool for small business owners - think Mobile dog groomers, window cleaners, in fact, any small business where taking a card payment when you are out and about, and it makes sure that you get paid.

Fewer and fewer people carry cash these days and using a portable credit card reader to accept payments is going to be standard practice.

The new iZettle reader connects via Bluetooth and supports contactless payments and Apple Pay, so this would be useful for restaurant staff for example. There's no doing a runner from your table without paying using this device!

The software works with smartphones that use version 4.1.2 Android version or later and that means early Sony Xperia Z phones are supported as well as the Samsung Galaxy ST and HTC One. Check the website for a full list of supported phones.

There are no monthly fees or contracts.

Summary

All four of these mobile credit card reader solutions would be a good choice. Square, Sumup and iZettle have better support than PayPal so that narrows it down a bit. iZettle has good support for all of the Star Micronics thermal printers, Square is the newest to market and has the broadest range of options, Sumup is well established with a solid track record in the market.
